Society and Technology Reflection

For my fifth reflection I will talk about a technology created by a mathematics professor at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1993 this professor, Richard Garfield, started to design a game during his free time. Volunteer players helped to refine the game, and when Garfield brought the idea to the CEO of Wizards of the Coast; the game could not be produced due to financial problems. Garfield returned with a general outline for the Trading Card Game concept of Magic: The Gathering.

A patent was granted to Wizards of the Coast for “a novel method of game play and game components that in one embodiment are in the form of trading cards.” This includes claims over card games that include similar elements of the Magic: The Gathering gameplay.

I used to play this game when I was in middle school, but eventually I grew out of it; though it is a fun game! One of my best friends, Kennon started to play Magic. It takes me back to the day, and I do miss it. Yesterday my friend Dennis, also my sister’s boyfriend, left a pack of Magic cards in my room with a note that read “Danny, Happy Valentine’s Day <3 Dennis.” This completely warmed my heart, and it was SUCH a surprise! I LOVE SURPRISES! We had a little dispute a couple weeks ago, and I thought that even though we settled it I was being ignored or something. Then I found this in my room! It is such a relief to know that even though people disagree, they can still find it in them to be kind.
